Vice Admiral Eduardo Ma. R. Santos AFP (ret.), a recognized maritime educator in the Philippines and in the Asia-Pacific region recently won the prestigious 2019 CrewConnect Global Lifetime Achievement Award, putting a Filipino among the world’s most respected leaders in the world’s international maritime and seafaring industry, particularly in maritime education and training.

Santos, a retired flag-officer-in-command of the Philippines Navy and Armed Forces of the Philippines vice chief of staff, is the pioneer president of the 20-year old Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) and executive vice president of Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), the world’s largest union of seafarers in the world.

CrewConnect Global is the largest event in maritime human resources, crew retention, maritime training and education and manning, It is being held annually over the past 20 years, averaging 500 delegates-maritime experts in attendance from all over the world every event or conference.

VAdm Santos was the 23rd Chief of the Philippine Navy from 199 to 1999. The man was responsible for the initial modernization of the Philippine Fleet, with the acquisition of three Peacock class patrol ships. He also served as Vice Chief of Staff of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

He was also former manager of Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port of Manlla, the premier and busiest port in the country.

Currently, Admiral Santos heads many professional and social organizations in the country, notably: as president Philippine chapter, Nautical Institute (NI); president, Bagong Bayani Foundation for Overseas Filipino Workers; president, Phil chapter of Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMAREST); chairman of Philippine Navy board of advisers, and president of Citizens’ Support your Navy Foundation. In the global scene, he is vice chairman of Global MET; chairman of the finance committee of international Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), and a member of ITF’s Ships Automation Working Group.

The award was presented to Santos by a panel of judges during a dinner and awards rites at the Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Pasay City last Nov. 20, attended by hundreds of global maritime industry leaders. International maritime top brass including International Maritime Organization (IMO) Goodwill Ambassador George Hoyt, Philippine Ambassador and also IMO maritime ambassador Carlos C. Salinas, chairman of Philippine Transmarine Corp. (PTC) , Chairman John Adams of International Chamber of Shipping (ICS, and Capt. John Lloyd, executive director Nautical Institute (NI) among others, graced the momentous event.
